When spring blooms – and your body rebels

Spring brings light, color, and new energy—but for millions of people, it also means runny noses, itchy eyes, and sneezing. Hay fever , also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis , is an overreaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless pollen.

Instead of fighting symptoms with strong medications, more and more people are turning to holistic approaches from naturopathy – not only to alleviate symptoms but also to treat hay fever naturally.

Plant power against pollen: natural remedies with effect

Nettle & Butterbur

Both medicinal plants are considered natural antihistamines. Nettle inhibits the release of histamine and thus reduces allergic reactions ( Center for Health ). Butterbur extracts have been compared to chemical antihistamines in studies, showing comparable efficacy but significantly better tolerability ( Wang et al., BMJ 2004 ).

Black cumin oil

Nigella sativa oil contains thymoquinone , which has anti-inflammatory properties and soothes mucous membranes – ideal for use in cases of pollen irritation.

Treating hay fever naturally from an Ayurvedic perspective

In Ayurveda, hay fever is considered an expression of weakened Agni (digestive fire) and excess Ama (metabolic waste) – combined with an imbalance of the Kapha and Vata doshas . Kapha represents mucus, Vata represents movement – in hay fever, both are imbalanced.

What helps according to Ayurveda?

  • Bitter & spicy herbs such as turmeric, trikatu, tulsi (holy basil)

  • Golden milk with turmeric and ginger in the evening

  • Nasya oiling : in the morning, apply a few drops of warm sesame oil into the nose – cleansing & soothing

  • Strengthen Agni : with easily digestible food, warm meals and regular meal times

  • Pranayama breathing techniques such as Nadi Shodhana to clear the energy channels and calm the nervous system

These measures are not only intended to alleviate symptoms, but also to provide lasting relief and balance to the body .

Treating hay fever naturally with TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hay fever is often understood as the effect of wind-cold or wind-heat on weakened Wei-Qi (defensive energy) . The body reacts hypersensitively because its barrier to external stimuli is weakened.

What does TCM recommend?

  • Chinese herbal recipes such as Xiao Qing Long Tang or Yu Ping Feng San – to strengthen the Wei-Qi and eliminate pathogenic factors

  • Acupuncture – e.g. points such as LI20, LI4 and GB20 – reduces swelling, regulates Qi flow and reduces overreactions

  • Diet according to TCM : no raw or cold food in spring; focus on warming, moisturizing foods with a slightly bitter taste

  • Exercise in nature with low pollen levels – promotes Qi circulation and inner stability

(TCM Clinic in Bad Kötzting; TCM literature: “Hay fever from the perspective of Chinese medicine,” S. Künkel)

Everyday tips for pollen season

  • Clean your living space : Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter, shower in the evening, and do not store clothes in the bedroom.

  • Avoid pollen : ventilate in the morning, plan trips after rain, use window screens

  • Nasal rinsing with sea salt solution : gentle, effective & soothing

  • Breathing breaks in nature – in the forest, by the lake or at low-pollen altitudes
